Michael Johnsen MP, Member for Upper Hunter today announced that racing in the Upper Hunter Electorate has been increased, a welcome boost following the announcement by Racing NSW of major prizemoney increases to country racing carnivals right across NSW from 1 August 2019.
Mr Johnsen said the increase in prize money is not only good for country racing, but will have flow on effects for the wider community.
“It is no secret that country NSW is doing it tough, especially given this unprecedented drought,” Mr Johnsen said.
“The flow on effects to tourism, increasing overnight stays and providing a much needed injection into our local economy is what we so desperately need right now.”
“There will now be eight feature Country Cup races with prizemoney of $200,000 at Scone, and the prizemoney for Scone’s Dark Jewel Quality will also be increased to $200,000.”
“The Muswellbrook Cup will receive an increase in prizemoney to $150,000.”
Mr Johnsen continued, noting that the investment in country race days will help strengthen links between racecourses and the communities they serve.
“Racing is more than just an event in regional communities, it’s part of our culture, which is why the Nationals in Government want to continue to make racing as enjoyable and accessible as possible,” Mr Johnsen said.
“Our message is simple – suit up, frock up and rock up to our local races in country NSW, you won’t be disappointed,” Mr Johnsen concluded.
Racing NSW will provide marketing and promotional support to local race clubs. Support will also be provided by Destination NSW to drive tourism opportunities around the events.
